We've got Iberico!
Our first ever Father's Day Spanish wine and ham fest
with Phil Bernstein and Kristi & William of The Vintner Group

Saturday, June 17, 1-4pm

Please join us Saturday.  We are very fortunate to have an entire Iberico ham here in the shop and figured why not crack a bunch of great Spanish wines to go along with it.  This is not just any ham…it's Iberico-the best of the best from acorn fed pigs.  We will be slicing away all afternoon so stop by for a few pieces and a glass of wine.

The beautiful medieval village of La Alberca, perched at the top of a mountain, is the home of Jamones y Embutidos Fermín. This family company carefully cures their Ibérico hams in the cool, dry mountain air for over two years, transforming them into a masterpieces of flavor.

Kristi and William of The Vintner Group will pour the following Spanish Selections:

2016 Muga Rioja Blanco

90% viura, 10% malvasía and white garnacha.  After macerating in the press for around 8 hours, this white wine ferments in new, French-oak casks. After fermentation it is left on its lees for a further 3 months until ready for bottling.  Muga is one of Rioja's best producers and their white is always a crowd favorite.

2015 Avancia Cuvee de O Godello

The 2015 Avancia Cuvee De O Godello is aged in 500- to 600-liter demi muids and after a portion is fermented in oak (with a small portion fermented in neutral oak and the rest in stainless steel), the wine spends eight months sur lie with 80% aging in stainless steel and the rest in oak. The 2015 is a beauty – with notes of honeysuckle, delicate flowers, crisp, honeyed citrus such as lemons, impressive minerality, a medium body and long finish. It is dry and pure. This is a beauty to drink over the next year or so, although I suspect it may last longer.

2016 Muga Rosado

60% Garnacha, 30% Viura and 10% Tempranillo. Consistently one of our most popular Roses-we love the 2016 version. With a beautiful salmon pink color and a nice dry finish simply delicious!  This was also featured in the Wall Street Journal this past weekend.

2010 Carlos Serres Rioja Reserva

This focused red is light and firm, with tart cherry, licorice, leafy and smoky flavors kept lively by crisp, orange-peel acidity. Not muscular, but has energy, in the traditional style.

2015 Descendientes de Jose Palacios Petalos de Bierzo

During the late 1980's, Alvaro Palacios travelled his native Spain selling French barriques to winemakers. But his journeys had a second purpose: to find the best place to achieve his goal of making Spain's greatest wine.

He ultimately decided, in 1990, on Priorat, where he would achieve worldwide fame with "L'Ermita" and "Finca Dofi." But there had been a close contender: Bierzo. It had all the ingredients that Alvaro wanted: incredibly steep hillside vineyards; distinctive terroirs; and, most importantly, ancient vineyards of Mencía—a unique red grape believed brought by French pilgrims during the Middle Ages.

The winery is dedicated to Alvaro's father, and Ricardo's grandfather, who passed away in early 2000. The wines are a worthy tribute to the man who inspired them.

Up to seven wines are made. The first, Pétalos del Bierzo, is assembled from old hillside and hilltop vines from across Bierzo's western edge. The wine is vinified for immediate appeal, but it retains the estate's signature finesse and restraint.

2014 Alto Moncayo Veraton

Most of the Moncayo wines tend to sell for higher prices, but the 2014 Alto Moncayo Veraton is their least expensive cuvée, overseen by famous Barossa Australian winemaker Chris Ringland. Made from 100% Grenache, it was aged in 60% new French oak and 40% American oak barrels for 16 months prior to bottling without filtration. This is a 1,500-case cuvée that is pedal-to-the-metal material, as one might expect from Ringland. With an opaque ruby/purple color, beautiful blackberry, charcoal and oaky notes are followed by a modern-style wine with huge fruit, big body, sweet tannin and a long finish. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.

2015 Scala Dei Black Slate Escaladei

From Spain's famed Priorat region, the Black Slate wines are a joint venture between importer Eric Solomon and vigneron Jordi Vidal.  This blend of Garnatxa, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Carinyena is sourced from the foothills of the Montsant mountains. It stands out among its Black Slate siblings as the most elegant of the lineup being inclined more towards red fruit than black, with a high-toned minerality and spiciness. It is selected from fruit aged in foudre and French oak demi-muids
