2004 Bordeaux
2004 Bordeaux - The Best Buy in Bordeaux today !
2004 provides a remarkable contrast to the extraordinary and atypical 2003. After one of the hottest, driest, smallest and shortest harvests ever last year, we have a “classic” Bordeaux vintage this year, saved by a fine, dry and sunny September which allowed grapes to ripen fully before picking began (often well into October). Fruit was, at many properties, able to hang from the vines 4 weeks longer than in 2003, which has resulted in good ripeness and well-balanced tannins. The better 2004’s are characterized by a purity of fruit, with sweet blue fruits instead of the black fruit of last year. Stylistically 2004 reminds me of 1995 – well made, well balanced wines with very good depth of fruit, good structure and focus and well integrated tannins. Yields are large and those properties which failed to limit production, with a “green harvest”, have risked dilution. However, there is no doubt that the top Châteaux - who have managed the vintage properly - have had considerable success. Good news for the consumer is that after record prices in 2003, we have seen a return to moderation this year.
Some very good to outstanding wines were made in 2004, and the bottlings are typically Bordeaux in style—aromatic and balanced, with refined tannins and long finishes. These are wines that will please any Bordeaux lover. They are reds that few other regions in the world could make—very fresh, racy and refined." James Suckling - The Wine Spectator 3/31/07

| 42488 | 2004 Chateau Ausone - St. Emilion "A dense purple color is accompanied by a celestial perfume of blue and black fruits, wet stones, flowers, and incense. On the palate, the wine exhibits exceptional power and concentration, but this historic terroir has also provided a surreal lightness to the wine's impression." | 40557 | 2004 Chateau Belgrave - Haut Medoc "There's black licorice, coffee bean and ripe fruit on the nose. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a wonderful concentration of ripe fruit and currant. Shows tar and vanilla on the finish. Best after 2013." James Suckling - Wine Spectator | 91 WS | 750ml | 39.99 | 29.99 | | |

| 42002 | 2004 Chateau Canon - St. Emilion "probably the best Canon in a number of years. It is still made in a relatively austere, tannic style, but strong black cherry and loamy soil notes intermixed with some licorice and background subtle oak lead to a rich, elegant, stylish effort that is closed and in need of cellaring." Robert Parker - Wine Advocate | 90+ WA | 750ml | 89.99 | 69.99 | | |
| 34977 | 2004 Chateau Climens - Sauternes "Shows apricot tart, with hints of candied lemons on the nose. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with lovely concentration and a lemony, spicy, almost flinty aftertaste. Impressive for the vintage. Very lively and zingy on the finish." James Suckling - Wine Spectator | 92 WS | 375ml | 41.99 | 34.99 | | |

Very refined and balanced. Another winner from Pontet-Canet. Best after 2011." James Suckling - Wine Spectator | 93 WS | 750ml | 89.99 | 69.99 | | |
