2006 Bordeaux Futures Offering

A surprisingly good year for the finest terroirs. “I did not expect the highlights of 2006 to be as promising as they turned out. There was little talk about the vintage following the harvest, and after the wine press and the proprietors exhausted themselves with their praise of the 2005s, there was little need to start additional speculative fires. However, the 2006 vintage has produced many fine wines, and overall, it is superior to 2004.”
Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate - May 2007.

The 2006 vintage in Bordeaux has indeed produced some very fine wines. But it is a vintage that required work in the vineyards before the harvest and some rather severe selection of grapes after the harvest. Therefore it is a vintage in which the most diligent producers made the best wines. After spending the first week of April in Bordeaux tasting hundreds of wines, I will purchase only the finest wines from the 2006 vintage to offer ‘en premeur’. Production is definitely down for the best wines of 2006 and hence the quantities available will be much smaller compared to the 2005 vintage.

"A brilliant effort from this vineyard run with perfection by proprietor Hubert de Bouard, the 2006 is a classic blend of 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Franc. Revealing no hardness from unripe tannin, it is an opulent, fleshy, sensationally rich effort with a fabulous texture as well as a long finish."

395012006 Chateau Beausejour Becot - St.-Emilion

"While the 2006 does not measure up to the magnificent 2005, it is an outstanding effort offering aromas of sweet black cherries intermixed with pain grille, licorice, and smoke. Ripe, with excellent texture, medium to full body, and surprisingly silky tannin, it can be enjoyed over the next 12-14 years. "

394342006 Chateau Bellevue - St.-Emilion

"A blend of 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc, cropped at a remarkably low 30-36 hectoliters per hectare, the 2006 represents the essence of terroir with its crushed rock/steely notes intermixed with flower, black raspberry, cherry, and blackberry characteristics. It is a full-bodied, dense, rich, powerful, moderately tannic offering with a broad texture, sensational purity, and an exceptionally long finish. "

394352006 Chateau Branaire Ducru - St.-Julien

"The 2006 is similar to the 1996 Branaire, but with sweeter fruit. A deep ruby/purple hue precedes a perfumed nose of sweet boysenberries, black cherries, minerals, spring flowers, and a hint of pain grille in the background. Fresh, savory, medium to full-bodied flavors coat the palate with beautiful purity, no hard edges, ripe tannin, and intense fruit. This elegant, layered, impressive offering will be at its peak between 2012-2025. "

393772006 Chateau Calon Segur - St.-Estephe

"The 2006 is highly successful, as Madame Gasqueton said, no doubt because of the de-leafing and crop-thinning done throughout the summer. A deep dark ruby/purple hue is accompanied by a sweet nose of black cherries, damp earth, and a hint of herbs. Medium-bodied with surprisingly soft tannin, no austerity, decent acidity, and a fruit-forward, fleshy personality, it should be accessible at an earlier age than the blockbuster 2005."

"Stephan von Neipperg’s flagship estate (and, in my opinion, one that should have been upgraded to a premier grand cru classe in the new St.-Emilion hierarchy) has turned in another stunning performance. A blend of 55% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, from small yields of 35 hectoliters per hectare, the 2006 exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as scents of creme de cassis, pain grille, espresso roast, chocolate, and spicy roasted herbs. Dense, medium to full-bodied, and surprisingly opulent for a 2006, with oodles of fruit, and terrific structure as well as purity."

395072006 Chateau Clos de Sarpe - St.-Emilion

"Another garage wine made under the supervision of Michel Rolland’s well-known assistant, Jean-Philippe Fort, there are 825 cases of this cuvee that is, literally, made grape by grape. Not for the shy of heart, this wine exhibits enormous extraction, tannin, and richness. A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc from yields of 20 hectoliters per hectare, this inky/blue/purple-tinged effort possesses high levels of fruit and tannin, a massive structure, a foreboding, primordial character, and a backwardness matched only by that of Ausone. 393802006 Chateau Clos Fortet - St.-Emilion

"Clos Fourtet has produced a succession of brilliant wines since 2003. While the 2006 may not equal the prodigious 2005, it possesses a dark ruby/purple hue as well as sweet notes of creme de cassis, spring flowers, new oak, and a steely/mineral-like nuance in the background. Attractive, plump, opulent fruit on the palate is followed by a slight narrowing, but the finish is strong, with moderate tannin."

395752006 Chateau Cos d'Estournel - St Estephe

"Jean-Guillaume Prats told me that yields were a modest 38 hectoliters per hectare, and only 55% of the production made it into the 2006 Cos. The harvest took place between September 21 and October 6, and the final blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (78%), followed by 20% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. The dense ruby/purple-tinged 2006 recalls such vintages as 1988 and 1996. It offers a classic bouquet of incense, licorice, pain grille, black currants, truffles, and flowers. Medium-bodied and concentrated with moderately high tannin, it will require 8-10 years of cellaring, and should keep for 30 or more. It is another terrific effort from an estate that has done everything right over the last decade. pts "

This estate has only been producing wine for a little over a decade, and since it is made in very limited quantities, it represents the quintessential St.-Emilion garagiste wine. 394372006 Chateau Duhart Milon - Pauillac

"Not surprisingly, this estate’s owner, the Rothschild family (who also owns Lafite-Rothschild), has been making significant investments in Duhart’s winemaking facilities and vineyards. These investments helped create a blockbuster 2003 and 2005 as well as an outstanding 2006. Eliminating 50% of the crop produced a 1986-ish blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot exhibiting notes of creme de cassis, pain grille, black cherries, and undertones of loamy earth, herbs, and spice. Copious richness and up-front fruit (the latter a characteristic of the vintage) along with good freshness and liveliness suggest this Pauillac will be at its finest between 2012-2025. "

"Perfectionist sculptor/stonemason, Michel Gracia, is the force behind this wine, which comes closest to imitating the titan of St.-Emilion - Ausone. Cropped at 16 hectoliters per hectare, the black/purple-tinged 2006 is a blend of 80% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. It offers a gorgeous perfume of incense, blackberries, blueberries, and cassis, a full-bodied, powerful attack, wonderful purity and precision, sweet tannin, and amazing texture as well as length. "The 2006 Haut-Brion was somewhat closed when I tasted it, especially when compared to its blockbuster rival/sibling, La Mission Haut-Brion. The Haut-Brion (11,000 cases) reveals classic notes of smoke, scorched earth, liquid minerals, plums, currants, and cherries, medium body, and sensational purity as well as concentration. The high tannins will no doubt soften with aging in barrel, and, as Haut-Brion often does, the wine should expand and put on weight. The 2006 appears to be built along the lines of the 1996. "

394402006 Chateau L'Evangile - Pomerol

"Virtually every estate in this sector of Pomerol (the plateau adjacent to St.-Emilion) enjoyed a terrific 2006 vintage, so it is not surprising that the Rothschild-owned l’Evangile is a knock-out. Yields were a low 33 hectoliters per hectare, and 70% of the crop made it into the grand vin. The alcohol level of 14% is essentially equivalent to that of the 2005. A blend of 86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc harvested between September 13-29, it displays a deep ruby/purple color in addition to a sweet bouquet of chocolate, black currants, cherries, licorice, and incense. Terrific fruit on the attack, medium to full body, a layered mouthfeel, and substantial, but sweet, well-integrated tannin suggest this stunning St.-Emilion will be at its finest between 2012-2025.” Only 900 cases made."

"La Conseillante has been hitting on all cylinders over the last several vintages, and the 2006 may rival both the 2005 and 2000. Made in an atypical broad, fleshy style, it exhibits a dark ruby/purple hue, plenty of structure and tannin, but superb concentration. Usually a Burgundian-styled, elegant effort, the rich, well-textured 2006 is a bigger, more blockbuster example displaying a deep ruby/plum/purple color. It requires 2-4 years of cellaring, and should last for two decades. Bravo!"

The exotic, voluptuously-textured 2006 offers an exuberant bouquet of roasted coffee, kirsch liqueur, licorice, and pain grille. Opulent, fleshy, and already delicious (because of its low acidity and silky tannin), it will drink beautifully young, and last for at least 12-15 years. Sadly, fewer than 1,000 cases are produced. "

"Wow, has this property come back with resounding quality over the last three or four years, producing wines that are better than anything they made during their glory days in the seventies and eighties. The 2006 La Lagune, a superb effort for the vintage, boasts a saturated purple color as well as a sweet perfume of boysenberry jam intermixed with raspberries, pain grille, and flowers. A deep ruby/purple color is followed by sweet aromas of graphite, creme de cassis, spice, and subtle wood. 394392006 Chateau Lagrange - St.-Julien

"A strong effort for this estate, the 2006 Lagrange competes with the finest wines of the appellation. One of my pet peeves with this wine is that the oak is often excessive, but in this vintage, it is beautifully integrated, allowing the sweet cassis, licorice, herb, and spice box notes to dominate. Ripe and medium to full-bodied with moderately sweet tannin, abundant fruit, and a long finish, it is similar to the 1996 Lagrange, with perhaps more fruit. "

"Under the leadership of the extraordinarily talented team of Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt, this 25-acre estate on the Cote Pavie (one of St.-Emilion’s finest terroirs) has soared in quality. The monumental 2005 Larcis Ducasse has been followed by another brilliant effort in 2006. Unfortunately, production is less than 3,000 cases. The final blend of 89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc (from yields of 27-34 hectoliters per hectare) has resulted in a soft, opulent wine revealing notes of cedar, roasted herbs, smoke, black cherry liqueur, plums, and cassis. 395832006 Chateau Montrose - St Estephe

"This is the first vintage produced under the full control of Jean-Bernard Delmas, the person responsible for so many of the great Haut-Brions between 1961 and 2003. About 60% of the production made it into the final blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot and Petit Verdot. It is medium-bodied with a multilayered texture, sweeter, more finely tuned tannin than past vintages, and a powerful finish. There has been no compromise to the wine’s massive richness and density, but rather an emphasis on taming some of the huge tannins Montrose produces. It is an outstanding, fresh, lively effort that appears to be a brilliant achievement for the vintage. The tannin level ranks alongside such great Montrose vintages as 2005, 1990, and 1989, but they are noticeably sweeter. It should age handsomely for 30 or more years."

"More accolades are due proprietor Bernard Magrez, Bordeaux’s leading visionary, for what he is accomplishing at his flagship estate as well as at myriad other properties. Pape-Clement’s harvest took place between September 21 and October 10. Yields were only 40 hectoliters per hectare, and the final blend was 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Franc. While the 2006 will not make anyone overlook the immortal 2005, it is a brilliant, blue/purple-tinged effort exhibiting aromas of lead pencil shavings interwoven with blueberries, raspberries, black currants, and background wood. Medium to full-bodied, pure, textured, and structured, this beauty is one of the appellation’s finest wines. It should put on even more weight with some bottle age. "

397142006 Chateau Pavie - St Emilion

"Another brilliant offering from Pavie, the 2006 reveals more sweet fruit and forwardness than the out-of-this-world yet more massive 2005. Low yields of 28 hectoliters per hectare, a 37-day maceration, malolactic in barrel, and aging on its lees have resulted in a stunningly rich, dense purple-colored wine displaying a smorgasbord of red and black fruits intermixed with notions of crushed rocks, spring flowers, and subtle wood. Full-bodied, dense, and more fruit-forward than most Pavies, it possesses layers of flavor as well as a stunning finish that lasts for more than a minute. As he has done in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2005, Perse has served up another candidate for the “wine of the vintage.” "

393902006 Chateau Pavie Macquin - St.-Emilion

"As of this vintage, Pavie Macquin is entitled to a premier grand cru classe designation in the revised classification of the wines of St.-Emilion (suspended in March because of pending litigation). Overseen by the dynamic duo of Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt, the 2006, a blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, should turn out to be one of the top wines of the vintage. It boasts an inky/blue/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of charcoal, blackberries, blueberries, licorice, and smoke. Full-bodied, powerful, and rich, it is nearly as prodigious as the virtually perfect 2005. An amazing wine for the vintage, it clearly emerges from a magnificent terroir."

395862006 Chateau Pichon Baron - Pauillac

"A strong effort from this well-run estate, Pichon Baron’s 2006 exhibits an inky/purple color as well as a sweet, pure nose of black currants, cedar, and smoky new oak. Full-bodied with ripe tannin, impressive concentration, and a layered mouthfeel, this is another noteworthy offering from an estate that has been remarkably successful over the last 15+ years."

395872006 Chateau Pichon Lalande - Pauillac

"Pichon Lalande’s new owner, the Roederer champagne firm, appears to have produced one of the finest Pichon Lalandes made in recent years. Administrator Thomas Do-Chi-Nam, assisted in 2006 by consultant Hubert de Bouard, declared only 41% of the production as the grand vin, resulting in a wine that should rival both the 2003 and 2000. The final blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon and 36% Merlot was cropped at 41 hectoliters per hectare. This gorgeous wine represents an updated version of the 1996. It boasts a dense purple color as well as a beautiful nose of espresso roast, chocolate, creme de cassis, cedar, and spice. Full-bodied and powerful with high tannin, an attractive mouthfeel, and a multilayered texture, it will be a backward-styled Pichon Lalande, but it is significantly better than the 2005, recalling some of the finest vintages produced over the last 20-35 years."

395062006 Chateau Pontet Canet - Pauillac

"One can’t say enough about the extraordinary quality proprietor Alfred Tesseron has achieved at Pontet-Canet over the last decade. The 2006 is another massive wine that may be as backward and concentrated as its nearby neighbor, Mouton Rothschild. Boasting a dense purple/black color in addition to aromas of creme de cassis, incense, burning embers/charcoal, and pain grille, it is monstrous in the mouth with huge flavor concentration, extremely high tannins, and significant extract. 394422006 Chateau Rauzan Segla - Margaux

"A strong effort from this property situated across the street from Chateau Palmer, Rauzan-Segla’s harvest occurred between September 21 and October 7. Fifty-five percent of the production made it into the final blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot. A soft, classic style as well as ripe tannin suggest both the 1996 and 1986 vintages. The deep ruby/purple-tinged 2006 exhibits sweet, floral, black cherry, raspberry, and currant notes along with a subtle touch of menthol. Medium-bodied, elegant, pure, and surprisingly charming and approachable, it will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age, and should keep for 20-25 years. "

395882006 Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte - Pessac

"The brilliant succession of red and white wines that has emerged from Smith-Haut-Lafitte since the early 1990s is attributable to the passion and hard work of perfectionist proprietors Florence and Daniel Cathiard. The beautiful 2006 exhibits aromas and flavors of earth, graphite, sweet cassis, cherries, smoke, and spice. Medium-bodied with admirable concentration, soft tannin, and impressive purity, texture, and length, this powerful wine is built on an elegant framework."

395892006 Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc - Pessac

"This is a strong vintage for Bordeaux’s dry white wines, probably as good or better than 2005. Crisp acidity combined with outstanding concentration and the fact that most of the white grapes were harvested before the rains began in mid-September resulted in an impressive group of wines."
