Chile
Chile now enjoys a firm footing in the wine industry as a source for top quality red and whites at all price points. A staggering number of foreign wine companies have invested in this country and interesting new wines are popping up almost every month! While many customers are probably familiar with the wonderful Cabernet, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from Chile, I feel I should mention Carmenere and Syrah.
Carmenere, like Malbec, is a transplant from France. Interestingly enough, much of what was labeled Merlot in Chilean wine has now been found to actually be Carmenere! Carmenere usually offers up soft and nuanced flavors, and offers tremendous value. It is definitely worth seeking one out.
Syrah has enormous potential in Chile. It’s no secret that Syrah likes cool-climate growing regions (think France’s Northern Rhone Valley) and Chile’s mountainous microclimates are just the ticket for this grape. This will be an interesting development to follow, as more and more interesting Syrah comes our way. I would highly recommend the 2004 In Situ Syrah as a good starting point.
