2021 Colgin Cellars - Napa Estate Red IX (750ml)
Colgin Cellars was founded by Ann Colgin, who released her first vintage in 1992 using fruit purchased from the Herb Lamb Vineyard on Howell Mountain. She and her husband Joe Wender later acquired their own land, planting Tychson Hill in St. Helena in 1996 and the IX Estate on Pritchard Hill in 1998. The name IX refers to the vineyard's parcel number and also nods to September 9th, the date the couple married. Allison Tauziet has directed winemaking since joining as assistant winemaker in 2005, and LVMH acquired a controlling stake in the winery in 2017, though Colgin and Wender remain closely involved.
IX Estate sits on the steep, rocky slopes of Pritchard Hill and is farmed organically, with compost and cover crops used to build soil health over the vineyard's decades of cultivation. The 2021 blend combines Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller portions of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, then rests for 22 months in new French oak, a long elevage suited to a wine built for extended aging.
The wine offers black cherry, cassis, and dark chocolate layered with sage, bay leaf, and violets, backed by a mineral, iron-like edge. Full-bodied and velvety, with firm but polished tannins, it carries a long, structured finish. Pair it with dry-aged ribeye, braised lamb shank, or aged pecorino.
