You can smell The Funk's funk before you even get the cap all the way off. This rum, distilled in St. Catherine, Jamaica and billed as unaged heavy pot still rum, wholly earns its name. It's produced by Proof & Wood, the outfit behind the Deadwood line of whiskeys, and is the only rum in the portfolio. At 50% alcohol, it's designed to be hot but not overpowering, all so that The Funk's funkiness can be fully appreciated. The nose is redolent with overripe hogo character, fermenting pineapples and mangoes, sea spray, and an animalistic musk. On the palate: Much the same, fruit and stank (but mostly fruit) with hints of the beach, sandy and sweaty. It's all filtered through a heavy amount of alcohol ? though it's not unmanageable even at full proof. The finish is sharp and again quite focused, the tropical fruit notes lingering for ages.
