The 2020 Riesling Scharzhofberger Spätlese A.P. #6 reflects numerous parcels and pickings with largely healthy fruit but slight botrytis influence. Quince and white peach hover between fresh and jellied, overlain with heady, musky perfume of peony and narcissus. But there are also elements of honeydew and mint – especially on the polished, delicate palate – to supply the cooling side to flavors that is familiar from other Egon Müller 2020s. The superbly sustained finish soothes yet invigorates and refreshes, with musky and chamomile floral billowing, cooling traces of mint, and lightly stimulating hints of wintergreen and cress. There is no question that this wine has an especially serious future, even by exalted Scharzhof standards.
