The 2019 Rully Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru comes from the domaine's monopole, a hectare planted in 1952 located next to woods, ploughed twice a year and then tended by hand. The vines here are sensitive to both frost and heat. It is matured in five- or six-year-old barrels with just 10% new. It has a well-defined bouquet with orange blossom, peony and grapefruit aromas that seem to explode from the glass. The palate is well balanced with a slightly viscous entry, beautifully poised with immense purity. Frankly this is up there with some of the best wines that I have tasted in the C?;te de Beaune with wonderful persistence on the finish. A must-buy and no, the score is not over-generous for a Rully.
