Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2014 Heavily Peated Whiskey 750ml

Bruichladdich distillery on Islay describes itself as a champion of terroir, and the Port Charlotte Islay Barley series is its clearest expression of that philosophy. This heavily peated line, part of the distillery's Provenance range, uses barley grown exclusively on Islay itself rather than sourced from the mainland, sourced from eight farms scattered within about fifteen miles of the distillery. Each farm's distinct soil and microclimate contributes subtle variation, giving the whisky a genuine sense of place that sets it apart from more conventional peated Islay malts.

Distilled in 2014 from Concerto and Propino barley grown on the island, this expression was peated to 40 parts per million, higher than many well-known Islay peated whiskies. It matured for seven years, primarily in first-fill bourbon barrels, with smaller portions resting in second-fill virgin oak and second-fill wine casks. The whisky is bottled at 50% ABV, giving it more depth and weight than standard-strength releases while still allowing the underlying barley character to come through.

The nose combines peat smoke with honey, stone fruit, and a touch of exotic spice, while sea spray and earthy undertones hint at the whisky's coastal origins. On the palate, sweet honey and citrus meet charred heather and toasted oak, with vanilla and creamy marzipan rounding things out. The finish is long and dry, closing on toasted oak and lingering smoke.
