Buchanan's 12yr Deluxe Blended Whiskey 750ml

James Buchanan founded James Buchanan & Co. in 1884, launching what he first called Buchanan's Finest Liqueur, later briefly renamed Special Red Seal before trademark issues forced a change. The blend earned early recognition when Buchanan's company won a contract to supply the House of Commons in 1885, and he opened his own distillery in 1895 to help secure supply. Buchanan personally approved the blend that would eventually become the 12 Year Deluxe, built around a lighter, more refined style than many Scotches of the era. Diageo owns the brand today, though its packaging and branding still lean heavily on Buchanan's own name and legacy.

The 12 Year Deluxe combines around forty Scotch whiskies, most of them single malts, with a notably large share coming from the Highland distillery Dalwhinnie. Both column and pot stills contribute to the component whiskies, which mature in a mix of former bourbon and sherry casks before blending. Every whisky in the mix is aged a minimum of twelve years, and the finished blend is bottled at 40% alcohol by volume.

The nose offers fruity pear and apricot alongside citrus and vanilla, with light oak and a touch of maritime peat underneath. On the palate, that peat shows up front, joined by vanilla, orange peel, toffee, and a hint of cocoa, with cinnamon and ginger emerging toward the back. The finish runs short to medium, closing on lingering pear, clove, and creamy vanilla. It works well built into an Old Fashioned or served over ice.
