Captain Morgan traces its roots to 1944, when Seagram's CEO Samuel Bronfman purchased the Long Pond distillery in Jamaica and acquired a spiced rum recipe developed by the Levy Brothers, a Kingston pharmacy that had long blended raw rum with medicinal herbs and spices. The brand, named for the seventeenth century Welsh privateer Sir Henry Morgan, later moved production to Puerto Rico, where Destilería Serrallés distilled the rum under license for decades. Diageo acquired Captain Morgan in 2001 and, when the Puerto Rico agreement expired, built a new dedicated distillery on St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where most of the brand's rum has been produced since 2012.

Original Spiced Rum is distilled from Caribbean sugarcane molasses in a continuous column still, then aged roughly one year in oak barrels before a proprietary blend of Caribbean spices, along with vanilla and caramel flavoring, is added ahead of bottling. The finished product is bottled at 70 proof, lighter than many aged sipping rums, reflecting its design as an approachable, mixable spirit rather than a rum meant to showcase long barrel aging or a single origin distillate.

The rum offers a sweet, inviting nose of vanilla and brown sugar, with a smooth, spiced palate built around caramel and warm baking spice, finishing soft and easy rather than complex, well suited to simple mixed drinks.

"Smooth and medium bodied, this spiced rum is a secret blend of caribbean rums. Its subtle notes of vanilla and caramel give classic rum cocktails a distinctive, flavorful finish."
