Código 1530 was born from a private family recipe developed over generations by an artisan distilling family in Amatitán, Jalisco. The brand was co-founded with backing from country music star George Strait and takes its name from the year Amatitán was officially founded, a nod to the deep tequila-making history of the town. Production takes place at Varo Destilería under NOM 1616, where the house focuses on additive-free spirits that lean into the interplay between agave and barrel rather than masking it.

This añejo is distilled twice from 100% Blue Weber agave sourced in the Jalisco lowlands, cooked in low-pressure autoclaves and fermented without fiber in stainless steel tanks using deep well water. What sets it apart is the barrel program: rather than standard used bourbon barrels, the spirit rests for 18 months in French white oak barrels that previously held Napa Valley Cabernet wine, a choice that folds subtle red wine character into the finished tequila alongside the usual oak influence.

That wine-cask aging shows clearly in the glass. The nose carries rich dried fruit, warm vanilla, and toasted oak, with a faint sweetness left behind by the Cabernet barrels. On the palate, butterscotch and caramel meet cooked agave and baking spice, with a whisper of smoke running underneath, closing on a finish that is easy drinking, slightly dry, and lingers pleasantly.
