Diplomatico Seleccion de Familia Rum 700ml
Diplomático is produced at Destilerías Unidas S.A., a family owned distillery owned by the Ballesteros family located in the foothills of the Andes near Terepaima National Park in Venezuela's Lara state. The distillery is distinguished by its use of three distinct still types, a traditional Scottish double retort pot still, a French Barbet column still, and a Canadian batch kettle sourced originally from a Crown Royal whisky distillery, which allows the team to produce a wide range of rum styles from heavy to light. Selección de Familia represents the top tier of the Diplomático lineup, developed to offer a more sophisticated tasting experience for serious rum drinkers.
The blend draws roughly ninety percent from heavy rum distilled on the copper pot still, with the balance split between the column still and batch kettle spirit. These components are matured separately for up to twelve years in American white oak ex bourbon barrels and former sherry casks, including both Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso, before being brought together. The finished rum is bottled at 43% ABV.
The nose is deep and layered, offering dried fruit such as prunes, figs, and dates alongside vanilla, tobacco, and toasted coconut. The palate is rich yet notably dry for a Diplomático release, with baked banana, dark chocolate, and light wood tannins leading to a long finish of toasty oak and black tea. It shines in a Jungle Bird cocktail, where its natural sweetness balances Campari's bitterness, or simply served neat.
