Dissent (Republic Restoratives) Gin 750ml
Dissent Gin comes from Republic Restoratives Distillery, the women-owned, LGBTQ-owned distillery in Washington, DC, founded in 2016 and known for weaving its political values directly into its spirits lineup. Dissent was created with the help of gin master and bartender Nicole Hassoun and takes its inspiration from Ruth Bader Ginsburg, drawing on her well-known history of dissenting Supreme Court opinions and the flavors associated with her native Brooklyn. The gin's label was designed by DC artist Rose Jaffe, known locally for her large-scale mural work, and its release followed the Supreme Court's 2022 decision overturning Roe v. Wade, with proceeds from sales directed to the National Network of Abortion Funds.
The gin is built around an unconventional botanical bill for the category: pepper, allspice, bay leaf, ginger, lemon, and mandarin orange, finished with hickory smoke through a cold-smoking process. Rather than following a citrus-and-juniper London Dry structure, Dissent leans into savory, smoky depth, giving it a profile closer to a barbecue-adjacent spirit than a traditional gin. It is vegan and bottled at 45 percent alcohol by volume.
The result is a smoke-forward, savory gin, with hickory smoke and pepper leading the way and warm baking spice from the allspice and ginger filling in underneath. Lemon and mandarin orange provide a bright citrus counterpoint, while bay leaf adds an herbal edge. The overall character is bold and unconventional, built to stand apart from more delicate, floral gin styles.
