Francis Darroze 30 yr Les Grands Assemblages Bas-Armagnac 750ml
Francis Darroze earned a reputation as one of the most respected names in Bas-Armagnac, building his house around the family restaurant in Villeneuve-de-Marsan and beginning in the late 1960s to seek out rare individual casks across small estates in Gascony. Rather than owning vineyards, Darroze works directly with roughly thirty partner domaines, aging the spirits he selects in his own cellars in Roquefort and Labastide d'Armagnac, a tradition now continued by his son, trained oenologist Marc Darroze.
Les Grands Assemblages is Marc Darroze's blended range, distinct from the house's single-estate Unique Collection, drawing on Armagnacs of different soils, vintages, and grape varieties to build a consistent, layered profile at each stated age. This 30 Year expression takes its name from the youngest component in the blend, meaning every eau-de-vie included has matured for at least three decades. True to house philosophy, Darroze never blends casks from the same domaine or vintage together, believing doing so would dilute each cask's individual character, and alcohol strength is achieved solely through natural evaporation in barrel rather than dilution with water.
At this age, fresh fruit gives way to dried and candied fruit character, with a spicy backbone and the first notes of rancio emerging alongside dry cocoa, espresso, and dried orange peel. The mellow alcohol and softened tannins reflect three decades of oak contact. Best enjoyed neat as a reflective digestif.
