Jefferson's was founded by Chet Zoeller, a respected bourbon historian, and his son Trey, who named the brand as a tribute to Thomas Jefferson. The company built its identity around small-batch blending rather than distilling its own spirit from the ground up, sourcing mature bourbon stocks and marrying them by hand to create a distinctive house style.

Jefferson's Reserve is crafted using the brand's "very small batch" approach, combining just eight to twelve barrels of varying ages into each bottling rather than the hundreds typically used for standard small-batch releases. The blend follows a mash bill of roughly 60 percent corn, 30 percent rye, and 10 percent malted barley, with some of the whiskey in the mix aged as long as twenty years in American oak. The result carries no age statement, since the blend shifts slightly from batch to batch, and is bottled at 45.1 percent alcohol by volume.

On the nose, look for cream, vanilla, butterscotch, and dried hay, along with soft notes of raisin. The palate opens a little sharp before settling into warm toffee, oak, tobacco, and brown sugar, with a lingering, gently spiced finish that showcases the blend's age and complexity.
