La Muse Verte Absinthe Liqueur 750ml
La Muse Verte traces to a family absinthe recipe developed in the early 1900s in Gironde, near Bordeaux, by the Berneau family, who also began producing pastis in 1935. In 2003 the recipe was acquired by Artez, a small Armagnac producer founded in 1995 by Jean-Philippe Brunello in the Bas Armagnac region, who continues the tradition by hand on the same twelve hectare property, which was certified organic in 2012. Jean-Michel Berneau, the recipe's longtime keeper, still works alongside Artez today as master blender.
The absinthe is built from around eight botanicals, led by grand wormwood, along with green anise, fennel, and lemon balm, several of which are grown directly on the property. The fresh wormwood leaves are cut and macerated within minutes of harvest, a detail unusual for the category, while each plant is steeped separately for as long as three weeks in neutral spirit before the infusions are blended together. No sugar, coloring, or other additives are used, and the finished spirit is bottled at a historically accurate 68% alcohol by volume, then packaged in an opaque black bottle to protect its natural color.
The result is a vivid, opalescent green spirit with a fresh, herbal nose built around wormwood's bitter edge, softened by anise and rounded out with grassy, citrus-tinged undertones from the lemon balm. The palate carries real complexity and a wild, garden-like character rather than a purely licorice-driven profile. Traditionally prepared with a slow drip of ice water over a sugar cube, it also makes a distinctive base for classic cocktails such as the Sazerac.
