Luxardo Cherry Sangue Morlacco Liqueur 750ml

Luxardo has been distilling in Italy since Girolamo Luxardo founded the company in 1821, and the family remains closely tied to its Marasca cherry orchards in Torreglia, near Padua in the Veneto region, where thousands of proprietary Marasca trees are cultivated. Best known for maraschino liqueur, the distillery has long used its cherry harvest to produce a range of other cherry-based products, of which Sangue Morlacco is among the most distinctive. The name itself comes from the poet and soldier Gabriele d'Annunzio, who dubbed the liqueur "Morlacco's Blood" in 1919 in tribute to the fierce Dalmatian warriors of that name.

Sangue Morlacco begins with juice pressed from Marasca cherries at the start of summer. A portion of that juice is set aside and allowed to ferment naturally into a kind of cherry wine, at which point neutral alcohol is added to halt further fermentation and fortify the liquid. The resulting spirit then rests in oak vats for an extended maturation period, gaining depth and color before being sweetened and bottled at 30% alcohol by volume.

The liqueur pours a deep, clear burgundy red and offers a pungent aroma of freshly pressed cherry juice with faint white pepper and marzipan. The palate is intense, thick, and syrupy, its sweetness balanced by natural fruit tartness, finishing with notes of cherry jam and cracked black pepper.
