Mortlach 12 yr Single Malt Whiskey 750ml

Mortlach Distillery was established in 1823 in Dufftown, on the banks of the River Dullan in Scotland's Speyside region, making it the first distillery built in what would become known as the whisky capital of Scotland. Nicknamed "The Beast of Dufftown," Mortlach spent much of the twentieth century as a key component in Johnnie Walker blends after being acquired in 1923, and today operates under Diageo, still relying on its distinctive six stills of varying shapes and sizes.

Mortlach 12 Year Old, subtitled "The Wee Witchie" after one of the distillery's smallest stills, was introduced in 2018 as part of a trio of age-stated releases. What sets Mortlach apart is its unusual 2.81 times distillation process, in which the majority of the spirit is distilled three times while a smaller portion passes through only twice, producing a notably fuller, meatier character than typical Speyside malts. The whisky matures in a combination of European and American oak casks that previously held sherry and bourbon, then is bottled at 43.4 percent ABV.

The nose offers rich dried fruit, toasted almond, and cinder toffee alongside a savory, meaty depth and hints of dark chocolate. On the palate, warming oak and stewed plum meet cinnamon and soft raisins, with a touch of olive oil salinity, while the finish lingers long and warm with dried fruit, citrus oils, and a satisfying savory richness.
