Myers's Original Dark Rum was founded by Fred L. Myers, who established a trading post in Kingston, Jamaica in 1879 dealing in sugar, rum, and other spirits. The brand passed down through the Myers family for generations before eventually changing hands, and it is now owned by Sazerac. Despite its long corporate history, the rum has remained closely tied to its Jamaican origins and is still marketed as an authentic, old-line Caribbean product with a reputation built largely on bartenders and home mixers rather than sipping enthusiasts.

The rum is produced primarily at the Clarendon distillery in Jamaica from fermented molasses, using a blend of up to nine different rums drawn from both continuous and pot still distillation. The various components are matured separately for as long as four years in white oak barrels before being blended together. Some molasses is reintroduced after distillation, and caramel coloring contributes to the rum's signature deep, almost black hue, a practice common among traditional dark rums of this style.

On the nose and palate, the rum leans into rich caramel, burnt toffee, and black treacle, layered with blackstrap molasses, allspice, and a faint smokiness. The finish is warm and full bodied, with a lingering sweetness balanced by darker, slightly bitter notes.

"Myers's Rum is named after brand founder Fred L Myers, the molasses-derived blend of up to nine rums has been produced since 1879. Myers's rum uses only pure Jamaican molasses" and is "produced from continuous and pot still distillation and is then matured for up to four years in white oak barrels".""
