In-Store Tasting:
Azelia Barolo
with Lorenzo Scavino

Saturday, February 9th 1-4pm

Lorenzo Scavino began to vinify part of the grapes produced in the family's vineyards, a small rural reality in the heart of the Langhe region, in Castiglione Falletto in 1920.  His son Alfonso started enthusiastically to bottle the wine produced and with perseverance and willpower, the wines were for the first time exported.  Alfonso's son Luigi now dedicates to the family vineyards maniacal carefulness and attention. It is from the raw material, the grapes, that he obtains the very great quality of his wines.  Harvest is totally by hand, through a rigorous selection bunch by bunch. A minimum of two green harvests per year are carried out for each vineyard to further reduce the yields.

2014 Azelia Barolo DOCG

"Azelia's 2014 Barolo is understated, gracious and very pretty. Sweet tobacco, dried cherry, mint and crushed flowers all lift from the glass. Grippy, young Nebbiolo tannins extend the midpalate and finish. The cut and nervous energy of the year are very much on display. –Antonio Galloni

2013 Azelia Barolo DOCG

"Azelia's 2013 Barolo is a gorgeous, entry-level offering. Orange peel, cinnamon, rose water, herbs, sweet red berries and mint give the 2013 its distinctive, lifted personality. Silky and gracious, the 2013 is super-expressive today. The style is very much built on mid-weight structure and aromatics. This is a terrific introduction to the year."- Antonio Galloni

2013 Azelia Barolo DOCG Margheria

"The 2013 Barolo Margheria shows its typically high-toned, aromatic profile. Scents of lavender, sage, mint, leather and earthiness meld into a core of dark stone fruits. Veins of bright acidity and salinity give the flavors an extra kick of brightness on the finish. The relatively high-altitude of this site and the limestone-rich soils yield a brilliant, salivating Barolo. The Margheria was aged in cask." Antonio Galloni

2013 Azelia Barolo DOCG San Rocco

"Another highlight in this range, the 2013 Barolo San Rocco is utterly beguiling. The bouquet alone is striking, but it is the wine's total balance that is most appealing today. Tasted next to the Margheria, the San Rocco is deeper, darker and more overtly powerful, with a greater sense of Serralunga tannic clout. Dark cherry, tobacco, menthol, licorice and sweet spices give the San Rocco much of its exotic personality. The San Rocco was aged in French oak barrels, with about 10% new wood." – Antonio Galloni

2013 Azelia Barolo DOCG Bricco Fiasco

"The 2013 Barolo Bricco Fiasco is one of the most gracious and delicate wines I have ever tasted from this site. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, mint, cranberry and white pepper give the 2013 its distinctive high-toned personality. Moreover, the firm, searing tannins that are so typical of this site are remarkably polished. Readers should expect an aromatic, perfumed Barolo built on grace more than power. The Bricco Fiasco was aged in French oak barrels, with about 10% new wood." – Antonio Galloni

"The 2007 Barolo Riserva Bricco Voghera is a stunning interpretation with bold fruit contours and plenty of complexity as you read between the lines. Blackberry and red currant segue to tar, licorice, balsam herb and rosemary sprig. The intensity is bright and vibrant." -Monica Larner
