In-Store Tasting:
Fran Kysela
Rhone gems and more...

Saturday, November 9th, 1-4pm

Please join us this Saturday from 1:00-4:00 for a rare DC appearance from one of the best importers in the USA. Fran was honored a few years ago as "Importer of the Year" by Wine Enthusiast magazine. Here is a quick "review" from Robert Parker himself:

Fran Kysela, unlike most Americans, was born into a family that consumed and appreciated fine wine. One of the youngest specialty importers, Kysela began his career as the national sales manager for the import arm of Kermit Lynch's sprawling wine business. Subsequently, he worked briefly for another high quality importer, Weygandt-Metzler in Unionville, Pennsylvania. Inevitably, Kysela founded his own firm, dedicated to discovering high quality top estates in France and Italy [and Portugal].

Kysela's offerings all tend to be extremely pure, ripe, fruity wines...in short, faithful reflections of their appellations. He is not an aggressive interventionalistic importer à la Robert Kacher (or to a lesser extent, Neal Rosenthal, Eric Salomon, or Peter Weygandt), but neither does he permit his producers to take a laissez-faire approach to their work. In a few short years Kysela has emerged as one of the finest palates and selectors of top wine, whether it be an inexpensive Muscadet or a top of the line Burgundy.

Fran will show the following wines from his portfolio:

Alexandre Monmousseau - Cremant de Loire Brut

It is an interesting experience as a sparkling wine for people who want to have a fine and elegant wine comparable to Champagne for a very good price. A wine with aromas of white fruits with very fine bubbles, a round and slightly sweet attack followed by a fresh finish. Thanks to its fruity aromas, it can be enjoyed as an aperitif but will accompany all your desserts with white fruits.

2017 Croix Senaillet - St. Veran

Produced from a selection of 40 parcels spread over 17 hectares. Some of the parcels include: Maillettes, Bergades, Poncétys, Terres noires, Pommards, Chênes, Surigny, Prâgnes, Bruyère, Chailloux, etc. South/southeastern exposure with a few plateaux.

Unoaked Chardonnay. Crisp and fresh offering a delicious bouquet of white flower, peach, citrus and mineral aromas. The flavors are rich and concentrated showing ripe apples, litchee and citrus fruits with hints of spice. A great wine to pair with seafood, sushi, poultry and goat cheese.

2018 Lismore - Viognier Age of Grace

This is a Greyton WO.

Balance is the key to this wine. Viognier is an aromatic and generous varietal, it benefits from barrel maturation and lees contact with a fuller mouth feel and increased texture. This combined with the firm acid backbone and intense fruit will allow this wine to integrate beautifully and gain further complexity over the next 3-5 years.

Rich, lush and decadent. Viognier is a gorgeous variety. Honeysuckle, peaches and dried apricot with a lingering citrus finish. A clean fresh acidity supports the extravagance of the nose and the palate.

2016 Clos des Cazaux - Gigondas Tour Sarrasine

Darker and deeper than the estate's Vacqueyras, the 2016 Gigondas La Tour Sarrasine is 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre and 15% Syrah. Ripe plum and boysenberry notes lead the way, dressed up by sexy hints of raspberry, leather and baking spices. It's full-bodied and richly textured, with a long, velvety finish. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. -Joe Czerwinski - Wine Advocate

2016 Mordoree - Lirac Reine des Bois

One of the finest releases from not only this appellation but the entire Southern Rhône, the 2016 Lirac La Reine Des Bois is a unique blend of close to equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre that's brought up in 30% used barrels, the balance in stainless steel. It literally jumps from the glass with loads of blackberry and currant fruits, graphite, charred meats, and peppery herbs. Deeply colored, medium to full-bodied, with sensational purity, give bottles a year or two and enjoy through 2028. It's another brilliant wine from this estate that's landed on both feet after the passing of winemaker Christophe Delorme in 2015 -Jeb Dunnuck

2012 Johann Michel - Cornas Cuve Jana

Bigger and richer, with notions of barbecue, smoke, bloody meat, plum and licorice, the 2012 Cornas Jana packs a serious amount of fruit into its full-bodied, voluptuously textured profile, yet never seems cumbersome or over the top. Count me a fan and this knockout Cornas excels on all accounts. Unfortunately, there's not much of it to go around. Grab a couple bottles if you can, and enjoy it over the coming 15-20 years -Jeb Dunnuck Wine Advocate
