In 1962, Ridge made its first Monte Bello, and two years later its first zinfandel. Since that time, Ridge has championed single-vineyard winemaking, searching California for those rare and exceptional vineyards where climate, soil, and variety are ideally matched.
By 1968, production had increased to just under three thousand cases per year, and in 1969, Paul Draper joined the partnership. A Stanford graduate in philosophy—recently returned from setting up a winery in Chile's coast range—he was a practical winemaker, not an enologist. His knowledge of fine wines and traditional methods complemented the straightforward "hands off" approach pioneered at Ridge. Under his guidance the old Perrone winery (acquired the previous year) was restored, the finest vineyard lands leased or purchased, the consistent quality and international reputation of the wines established.
Organic & Sustainable Farming
As of January, 2020, 345 acres of vines at our Monte Bello, Lytton Springs, Geyserville, and East Bench vineyards are certified organic. Additionally, all of the vineyards we farm are certified sustainable by Fish Friendly Farming, a certification program for agricultural properties working to restore fish and wildlife habitats and improve water quality. As a result, the Sonoma County Winegrowers also recognize our Sonoma County vineyards as Certified Sustainable.
This is our fifteenth release from this 100% zinfandel vineyard. Favorable spring weather created ideal conditions for a full crop. To maximize color and flavor, we macerated the fermenting grapes for a week on average. After assembling seven of the eight parcels, the finished wine displays classic peppery red fruit typical of Dry Creek. Enjoyable upon release, this pure zinfandel will develop over the next seven years.
Ruby red color, focused cherry notes on the nose with toasty oak. On the palate, raspberry fruit with elegant tannins and an accent of mint on the finish.
2019 Ridge East Bench Zinfandel
"Based on 100% Zinfandel, the 2019 Zinfandel East Bench has a great perfume of red plums, wild strawberries, and flowery incense, with just hints of cigar and dried orange peel emerging with time in the glass. While it's not a blockbuster, it brings gorgeous intensity and richness in a medium-bodied, weightless, elegant package that delivers ripe tannins and notable acidity."
