Razzouk Distillery holds a distinctive place in Lebanese spirits history as the first producer to bottle and brand arak commercially, back in 1918 in Beirut. Before then, the spirit circulated through itinerant dealers who refilled customers' earthenware jars on the street. Razzouk changed that tradition, building a reputation that lives on in its enduring motto, "The Prince of the Souk is Arak Razzouk," and the family has continued producing arak by hand across generations since.

Production starts with special varieties of sweet mountain grapes, which are crushed and fermented before undergoing a slow, low-fire distillation meant to preserve the delicate character of the base spirit. Natural aniseed is then added, and the liquid goes through a second distillation to fully integrate its anise character. The finished arak rests in traditional earthenware jars for a minimum of six months before bottling, arriving at 50 percent alcohol by volume.

The aroma leads with fresh aniseed, followed by citrus zest and gentle herbal notes, with deeper layers of honey, stone fruit, and a faint warmth reminiscent of cayenne. On the palate, the spirit is smooth and well-rounded despite its strength, with bold anise flavor carrying through a silky, clear texture.

"Arak Razzouk is the anise-based spirit from Lebanon distilled from grape juice with fresh aniseeds, imparting its distinctive fresh savor, and making it the national beverage of its mother country. Arak Razzouk is made with special varieties of sweet mountain grapes, which are crushed and fermented, and then distilled over a low fire. Natural aniseed is then added and the mixture is distilled. The distilled product is poured into earthenware jars to age and mellow for at least six months.

Tracing its roots to the early 18th century, Arak Razzouk has provided refreshment for generations. Today, it is most often served on the rocks with an equal amount of water.
