Ron Centenario emerged in the 1980s from Costa Rica's Fanal distillery, the country's state supervised national distillery, which functions similarly to Havana Club's role in Cuba by guaranteeing consistent quality and authenticity across its output. The brand's Centenario Internacional line was created specifically to bring Costa Rican rum to export markets, and the Gran Reserva range, including the 25 year expression, represents the senior tier of that lineup, built to showcase the depth achievable through decades of tropical aging.

The 25 Aniversario is distilled from Costa Rican sugarcane on Spanish style column stills, then aged in small American white oak casks that previously held bourbon, using the solera method common to sherry production. In this system a cascade of barrel tiers, ranging in age from six to twenty five years, is continually replenished from the tier above as rum is drawn from the bottom, so the finished blend always carries a portion of its oldest reserves. Costa Rica's warm, humid tropical climate accelerates the rum's interaction with the wood throughout this long maturation.

The rum shows an aromatic nose of wood, green apple, and tropical fruit, opening into a rich, slightly sweet palate of vanilla, toffee, and dried fig, with roasted nuts and spice trailing into a long, warming, woody finish.

"Aged 25 years in small American oak casks that were once used for bourbon, this solera rum presents itself sweet and elegant with a rich aroma of tropical fruits, molasses, tobacco and oak. The smooth taste boasts vanilla and sweet fruit flavors accompanied by delicate notes of wood and citrus."
