Destillerie Purkhart has crafted eaux-de-vie, schnapps, and liqueurs in Austria since 1932, a tradition now overseen by Günter Purkhart, whose exacting distillation standards have made him a mentor to many of today's leading producers. Imported by Haus Alpenz, the collection reflects three generations of family expertise focused on capturing authentic, ripe fruit character rather than relying on artificial flavoring.

The elderberries used here are sourced from a stretch of Austrian terrain running from southwest Steiermark to the Seewinkel district in Burgenland, gathered from alpine valleys and meadows at elevations between 250 and 700 meters. Rich elderberries form the core of the liqueur, layered with rowanberries, red currants, and aronia berries for added complexity. A rowanberry eau-de-vie serves as the flavorful base spirit, and as with the rest of the Rothman & Winter range, the liqueur is bottled at higher proof with restrained sugar to let the fruit character lead.

Dark berry aromas mingle with subtle floral and earthy undertones, while the palate delivers concentrated elderberry flavor with hints of blackberry and a light herbal edge. The finish is clean and lingering, with a gentle tartness that keeps the sweetness in check. It works nicely with club soda or sparkling wine, and holds its own mixed into cocktails built on white rum, blanco tequila, or gin.
