Southern Comfort traces back to 1874, when New Orleans bartender Martin Wilkes Heron created a smoother, more approachable alternative to the rough whiskeys of the era, originally naming it Cuffs and Buttons before rebranding it Southern Comfort in the 1880s. The liqueur won a gold medal at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition and later became closely associated with Janis Joplin, cementing its place in American pop culture. The Sazerac Company acquired the brand in 2016 and rebuilt the lineup around its New Orleans roots, reintroducing real whiskey into the recipe and expanding the range to include the Original, Black, and a 100 proof expression.

Southern Comfort Black returns to a genuine whiskey base rather than the neutral grain spirit used in some earlier versions, giving it a more pronounced backbone than the Original. That whiskey foundation is blended with stone fruit and warming spice, following the same general formula Heron developed, but calibrated for a bolder, more whiskey forward result. It is bottled at 80 proof, noticeably higher than the Original's proof point.

The result carries an unmistakable whiskey character up front, layered with the brand's signature touches of peach, orange, vanilla, and cinnamon. It drinks smoother and sweeter than a straight whiskey while retaining more grip and spice than the softer Original, making it well suited to simple highballs or classic whiskey based cocktails.

"A strong bourbon forward profile with unpretentious zest and fruity accents, our 80 proof takes the first Southern Comfort involvement up an indent - for the individuals who like their additional smooth bourbon additional intense. Attempt it slick, on the stones or in a great mixed drink."
