Southern Comfort was created in 1874 by New Orleans bartender Martin Wilkes Heron, who set out to make a smoother, more drinkable alternative to the harsh whiskeys common at the time. He originally called his creation Cuffs and Buttons before renaming it Southern Comfort in the 1880s, and he patented the recipe in 1898. The liqueur earned a gold medal at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition World's Fair and later became a cultural icon thanks in part to its association with Janis Joplin. The Sazerac Company acquired the brand in 2016 and revived its New Orleans whiskey roots, reworking the recipe and expanding the lineup to include the Original alongside Black and 100 proof expressions.

The Original is built on real whiskey, a return to Heron's founding approach after years of using neutral grain spirit, then blended with stone fruits, citrus, and warming spices to create the brand's signature smooth, easy drinking character. It is bottled at a moderate proof that keeps the whiskey backbone gentle rather than assertive, distinguishing it from the bolder Black expression in the current range.

On the nose it offers sweet, fruity aromas of tinned peach, golden syrup, and a touch of marzipan, while the palate is sweet and creamy with peach nectar, soft spice, vanilla, and honey. The finish carries lingering warmth and fruit rather than a sharp alcohol bite, making it a natural mixer with cola or a simple squeeze of lime.
