Chateau direct... New arrivals from the outstanding 2016 vintage
We had a nice response to our 2010 Bordeaux email last week so we thought it would be fun to highlight some new (tariff free!) arrivals direct from Bordeaux. As you already know, 2016 was one of the greatest Bordeaux vintages in the last 50 years and prices really haven’t increased that much since release (that is sure to change). With perfect ex-Chateau provenance the wines on the below list are all excellent buys at various price points. -Phil Bernstein
p.s. You don’t need any help selecting the “blue chips” below but that 2016 Tour St. Bonnet at $22 is a ridiculous value and the De Pez is also a “steal”.

Needing lots of air to show at its best, its dense purple hue is followed by quintessential Latour notes of smoky blackcurrants, scorched earth, graphite, and lead pencil shavings. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Pauillac that has lively acids, a pure, seamless, layered mouthfeel, building yet perfectly ripe tannins, and that rare Latour mix of power, austerity, and elegance that makes this château so compelling. Pulled from just 36% of the total production, the 2016 is 92.9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7.1% Merlot hitting 13.5 alcohol with an IPT of 83. It\u0027s primarily academic at this stage, but it\u0027s starting to round the corner and clearly, with its level of fruit and overall balance, offers pleasure. I think it needs another 5-7 years to hit the early stages of its prime drinking window and will have 75-100 years of overall longevity.","Blurb3":"The 2016 Latour is a vintage that I have tasted a couple of times postbottling. On one occasion, it warranted a perfect score, but that was\r\nthen moot since this vintage had not been released. Now that it is due\r\nto hit the shelves this coming March, does the wine still merit that\r\nthree-digit accolade? Without question, yes. Deep lucid deep purple in\r\ncolor, it seems to shimmer in the glass. The bouquet plays with you, a\r\nbit of a femme fatale, distant for the rst few minutes during which I\r\nchatted with the superstar of this First Growth, winemaker Hélène\r\nGenin. Then, it magically coalesces and gains incredible intensity with\r\nblackberry, pencil lead, background hints of oyster shell and notes of\r\nJapanese wakame. The aromatics announce exactly which château you\r\nare doing business with. The palate is medium-bodied with ligree\r\ntannins, again, as I found before, blessed with beguiling symmetry and\r\nineable poise. Residing rmly on the black side of the fruit spectrum,\r\nthere is underlying mineralité. Veins of cassis run through the\r\npersistent nish. This is everything you could really wish for in a Latour.\r\nThe 2016 can be uttered in the same breath as the 1900, 1924, 1959,\r\n1961, 1982 and 2010. silky and exceptionally balanced, the 2016 has the pedigree and
complexity to allow for a number of years of very fine drinking.
Moreover, the 2016 delivers serious flavor intensity wi...
The 2016 de Pez has turned out well. Iron, smoke, savory herbs,
menthol and scorched earth all give Pez its distinctive feral, savory
profile. The tannins are still a bit tough, but time will help, to some
degree. It will be interesting to see what the...
The 2016 d'Issan, matured in 50% new oak and bottled at the end of May, was impressive out of barrel, and thankfully, it is the same in bottle. The very well defined bouquet features blackberry, tobacco, pressed violets and a subtle estuarine tang, almost...
The 2016 La Gaffelière is superb. Vivid and precise, with layers of nuance,

mint add brightness to this stunningly beautiful Saint-Émilion. La Gaffelière
is a blend of 70% Merlo...

The 2016 Latour is magnicent. Regal and nuanced, with tons of
energy, the 2016 is immediately captivating. The bouquet announces

A deep, complex wine, the 2016 Rauzan-S?gla is built to deliver pleasure for many decades to come. This is stunning, multi-dimensional wine of the highest level. Wow!
This is an extremely precise Smith-Haut-Lafitte, certainly a cerebral 2016 that might well be approachable young, yet will certainly age in consummate style. The ch?teau's own tasting note reads What more could one possibly want from a wine?" The answer t...
Tour St. Bonnet is located in Northern part of the Medoc (north of St. Estephe). One of the Médoc’s most reliable overachievers, Château Tour St. Bonnet has been under the stewardship of the Lafon family since the 17th century. The vineyards, planted predominantly to Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with touches of Petit Verdot and Malbec, lie on gravelly soils just north of Saint-Estèphe — prime Left Bank terroir without the lofty price tag.
The 2016 vintage in Bordeaux is already the stuff of legend, and Tour St. Bonnet shows it in spades: deep cassis, graphite, and tobacco leaf framed by supple yet persistent tannins. Unlike many of its neighbors, the wine is aged in traditional large oak foudres rather than small barriques, which preserves purity of fruit and a true expression of terroir.
A classic Cru Bourgeois: structured, honest, and built to drink beautifully now or evolve gracefully over the next decade.
