Just arrived from Burgundy... The star of the show in last week’s tasting! One of the best red burgs we have tasted in quite some time.

Last weekend, Chef Rod poured this wine for customers in the store and the reaction said it all. Glasses kept getting refilled, and more than a few bottles quietly disappeared into shopping baskets. Everyone’s reaction was the same -lots of “wows”! This wine punches way above its weight.

Charles Audoin is one of the benchmark producers of Marsannay, farming just over 14 hectares with a focus on old vines, low yields, and serious site expression. Marsannay may sit just north of Gevrey-Chambertin, but in the right hands and from the right parcels it delivers a level of precision and terroir clarity that rivals far more famous appellations.

“Au Champ Salomon” is a terrific example. The 2023 shows classic Audoin purity: crunchy red cherry, wild strawberry, subtle spice, and that savory, iron-tinged earthiness that reminds you this is real Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir. It’s energetic and finely structured, with enough depth to reward cellar time, but also dangerously drinkable right now.

This is the kind of Burgundy that wins over both casual drinkers and the folks who like to talk about soil, exposition, and vine age. Chef Rod clearly knew what he was doing when he picked it for the tasting.
