Our latest discovery from the Northern Rhone... The other Mouton!
I first tasted these wines back in 2018 or so when I attended the big Rhone fair in Ampuis. I was very impressed with them at the time and even tried to pay a visit to the winery. Alas, I knocked on the door (this is a very small winery that also doubles as the Mouton family’s home) and a window opened from the second floor. An elderly lady started yelling at me in French (not sure what she was saying but the vibe I got was to exit the property immediately!) so it wasn’t to be that we would import the wines of Domaine Mouton. Fast forward to last year and Caroline Mazard (who many of you know as the rep for the best-selling Pasquiers wines) mentioned to me that the Mouton’s are long-time family friends (she grew up in Condrieu). I related my story, she called the winery, they had a laugh about the misunderstanding with “grand-mère” and next thing I know we had a price list!
This small Domaine is run by father and son Jean-Claude and Andre Mouton who own some fantastic parcels in both Condrieu and Cote Rotie. Note the Condrieu is from Cote Bonnette (same vineyard that Rostaing made famous) and they own parcels in Maison Rouge-which is an exceptional terroir in the southern end of the appellation with very steep granite terraces (Vernay and Duclaux for example also have plots here). The red house sits at the bottom of the hill and is abandoned-it would make for quite the air B and B if anyone wants to invest! Anyway, I highly recommend making an investment in these wines if you enjoy authentic Syrah and Viognier at very (pre tariff) reasonable prices!
